A Beginner's Guide To CYA

news 99--CYA

What is CYA?
Cyanuric Acid (CYA), known as Pool Water Stabilizer or pool conditioner, is an important chemical that can stabilize the chlorine in your pool and extend its longevity. When a pool is exposed to sunlight, the chlorine will break down quickly, reducing its sterilizing capacity that will breed bacteria and algae. Therefore, CYA can slow down this process and keep your pool clean and clear for longer.

Why does CYA matter?
In general, under UV exposure, if there is not enough CYA or stabilizer, 90% of the chlorine in the pool will be lost within 2 hours. This prevents chlorine from doing its job, and your pool becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and algae. So CYA must be added in the pool under the sun, or using SDIC or TCCA is also appropriate, because they hydrolyze to produce Cyanuric Acid.

How much CYA does your pool need?
For outdoor swimming pools, the concentration of CYA above 20 mg/L can significantly slow down the photodegradation of chlorine. Too much or too little CYA is useless. CYA with high concentrations will cause chlorine lock-up, decreasing the disinfecting effectiveness of chlorine in the water. And insufficient CYA will result in the rapid loss of chlorine in sunlight so that there is not enough chlorine to kill bacteria and algae. So the right level of CYA is important.

How to maintain the right CYA level?
Monthly test the CYA level of the pool. Its level ranges from 20 mg/L to 100 mg/L. If there is too little CYA, you can add an appropriate amount of CYA powder, particles or tablets, which will slowly dissolve in the pool water; also, CYA can be dissolved in NaOH solution and then added in the water. After that, you need to retest the pH level. If it is higher than 7.8, it needs to be adjusted with acid. It is important to note that NaOH is corrosive, and you must wear a mask, safety goggles and chemical-resistant gloves when handling it. If there is too much CYA, you need to replace some of your pool water.

Safety precautions
- Following instructions
The instructions play an important role when using chemicals. These instructions will tell you the correct dosage of chemicals and how to apply them. Following the instructions can prevent accidents, which is safer.
- Wearing a mask
If necessary, you can wear a mask.
- Safe storage
Cyanuric Acid Powder easily absorbs moisture and clumps, so it should be sealed and stored in a dry and ventilated place.
