Cloudy pool water is a common problem in swimming pool maintenance. If you are struggling with this problem, pool clarifier is a good option. In this article, we will deeply discuss about Clarifiers.
What is pool clarifier?
Pool clarifier is a polymer that purifies cloudy water by collecting suspended fine particles. These tiny particles will go through the filter and back into the pool. Over time, the pool water will become more and more cloudy. When the clarifier is added to the pool, these fine particles tend to clump together in bigger particles, which are then captured and removed by the filter.
How does it work?
Actually, clarifier is a chemical with positively charged molecules that attracts negatively charged particles. Because of being suspended in water, these tiny particles from pollutants often have a negative charge. Adding a clarifier to the pool will attract negatively charged particles in the water and then gathers them together into clumps that are eventually captured by the filter.
What is the difference between clarifier and flocculant?
Some people may confuse flocculant with clarifier. In fact, Flocculant usually refers to aluminum. The difference is that flocculant needs to stand still, and the flocculation of the bottom of the pool should be sucked away with a vaccum, while the clarifier does not need to rest, and the sediment is filtered out by the sand tank.
How to use pool clarifier?
If you decide to use a pool clarifier, you can follow these steps that can help the clarifier work effectively.
1. Routine cleaning
Before adding the clarifier, you can give your pool a good clean. First, skim large floating debris in pool water. Then, brush your pool walls to remove the sediment. Finally, vacuum your pool manually.
2. Balance the water chemistry
Test your water to check pH and alkalinity levels. pH levels should be between 7.2 and 7.8, and alkalinity should be also within a reasonable range (60-180).
3. Run the pump and filter
Before adding the clarifier, make sure your pump and filter keep running until the water is clean.
4. Prepare and add clarifier
Read the instruction and add the clarifier with a correct dosage. Because different clarifiers have different strengths. It's also noted that keep the filter all day when the clarifier is working.
5. Clean your sand filter
After 2 or 3 days, your pool water will be clearer. Unlike flocculants, the clarifier does not need to test pH and alkalinity levels, which is much more convenient than flocculants. If necessary, you only need to backwash your sand filter.
