Benefits of Using Disinfectants

Disinfectants offer numerous benefits across various applications.

In swimming pools, disinfectants can ensure pool water safety by eliminating harmful bacteria and viruses, which helps prevent waterborne diseases and maintains clear, sparkling water for an enhanced swimming experience.

In household disinfection, these products significantly reduce the risk of illness by killing germs on surfaces, especially in high-touch areas like kitchens and bathrooms, creating a cleaner and healthier home environment for families.

For drinking water, disinfectants, such as SDIC tablets, can disinfect the water by removing pathogens in an emergency, ensuring that the water is safe to drink while improving the quality, taste and smell of the water.

In terms of fruit preservation, SDIC disinfectants extend shelf life by preventing microbial growth, thereby reducing spoilage and waste, and ensuring safe consumption by eliminating surface contaminants.

Furthermore, in the livestock and shrimp industry, disinfectants promote animal health by disinfecting living environments and reducing the spread of diseases, which enhances productivity and growth rates.

What to consider when choosing a disinfectant: SIDC for example

Effectiveness

Ensure the disinfecting ability of disinfectants. For instance, SDIC can eliminate a wide range of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses and harmful microorganisms.

Kill Time

Consider the time required for the disinfectant to take effect. SDIC is a rapidly dissolving chlorine disinfectant, which can achieve rapid disinfection effect, making it suitable for rapid hygiene needs.

Shelf Life

Check the stability and shelf life of the product. SDIC chemicals have a long shelf life, and when stored properly, they lose no more than 1% of their available chlorine in two years.

Safety

Consider the safety of chemicals, including any potential hazards to humans and the environment. When used according to the guidelines, SDIC disinfectant is very safe and stable, but proper handling is essential.

Ease of Use

Choose disinfectants that are easy to dissolve and use. The use of SDIC is very simple, according to a certain proportion of dissolved in water can be used.

Residual Activity

Consider whether the disinfectant provides residual protection.

Compatibility

Ensure that the disinfectant is compatible with the surface or system being treated, as certain chemicals can cause damage or adverse reactions.

Main Types of Disinfectants by Category

Here are the main types of disinfectants used in swimming pool chemicals, categorized by their chemical composition and application

01

Chlorine-Based Disinfectants

- Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate (SDIC): Fast-dissolving and effective for immediate disinfection needs, often in granular or tablet forms. Besides, SDIC chemical is more stable and has longer shelf life than other traditional disinfectants. When stored well, the loss of its available chlorine content will not exceed 1% within 2 years.

- Trichloroisocyanuric Acid (TCCA): Provides stable chlorine release, widely used for continuous disinfection due to its slow-dissolving nature. In addition, TCCA chemical can be made into multifunctional chlorine tablets.

- Calcium Hypochlorite (Cal Hypo): Granular or tablet form, often used for swimming pool shock treatment due to its high available chlorine content.

- Sodium Hypochlorite: Typically in liquid form, that is, bleaching water, it’s also an excellent chlorine disinfectant. However, its available chlorine content will decline rapidly affected by temperature, humidity, or other environmental factors. Even stored well, it will lose 50% of available chlorine within 4 months. Therefore, people now prefer to use SDIC disinfectants and TCCA disinfectants.

02

Bromine-Based Disinfectants

Bromine Tablets: Bromochlorodimethylhydantoin, also BCDMH, different from chlorine-based disinfectants, belongs to bromine-based disinfectants. It’s effective in high-temperature environments, like spas and hot tubs, due to bromine's stability at elevated temperatures and its lower pH impact than chlorine.

03

Biguanide-Based Disinfectants

Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMB): A non-chlorine sanitizer, ideal for people sensitive to chlorine. It's often combined with hydrogen peroxide to use in the pool system (PHMB as a disinfectant, and hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizer).

04

Ozone Generators

Ozone: Used as a secondary disinfectant, ozone systems produce ozone gas that oxidizes and eliminates contaminants. Effective for minimizing chloramine formation.

05

UV Light Systems

Ultraviolet (UV) Light: UV systems expose water to UV-C rays, which effectively kill bacteria and viruses. Often used in tandem with chlorine or bromine as a supplementary disinfectant to reduce chemical usage and chloramine levels.

06

Mineral Sanitizers

Copper-Silver Ionization: Introduces silver and copper ions into the water, which disrupt microorganism function. Often combined with low-level chlorine or bromine to maintain disinfection.

Key Considerations

Each disinfectant type has its unique benefits and is often chosen based on specific pool needs, user sensitivity, environmental impact, and local regulations. Chlorine chemical remains the most popular due to its effectiveness and cost-efficiency, while alternatives like bromine and UV systems are preferred for particular applications such as spas or health-sensitive settings.

What Are the Modes of Action of Disinfectants?

Different biocidal products have different modes of action to affect microorganisms, but in general, they act in two different ways: growth inhibition and lethal action.

Disinfectants usually work by targeting specific components of the cell to either inhibit its’ ability to replicate and divide or disrupt its’ function or structure.

Alcohol-based products are an example of disinfectant which denatures proteins and solubilises lipids in the cell wall or cell membrane resulting in it to lose its’ structure and collapse as well as its’ ability to act as a barrier to physical or chemical attack. Whereas quaternary disinfectants denature cell proteins to disrupt and disorganise the cell membrane to cause cell leakage.

Oxidising disinfectants, such as chlorine-based and peroxide-based products, work by combining with oxygen to oxidise and denature the proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates of the microorganism. When Chlorine is dissolved in water Hypochlorous Acid forms and can easily penetrate the cell wall and membrane of the organism. Once inside the cell it can oxidise various components including metabolic enzymes and DNA.

As a result, there is a decrease in pH within the cell and reduction in cellular function including cell growth and cell division. Hydrogen peroxide in particular attacks proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids. The effect of hydrogen peroxide on the DNA of a cell results in inhibition of DNA synthesis and DNA stand breakage.

Follow label directions

All disinfectants must be used in line with the manufacturer's guidelines and the directions on their labeling. These directions include approved application methods, the correct contact time, and correct dilution of concentrated products.

Dilute correctly

The product label on a dilutable product will specify how much water must be added to achieve the correct dilution for effective disinfection. Using the wrong dilution can make the disinfectant ineffective and increase health and safety risks associated with using it.

Ensure correct contact time

The product label will specify how long the product must remain wet on the surface (known as the contact time) to ensure that disinfection is effective. If the surface dries sooner than the contact time there is no guarantee that the product has killed the pathogens claimed on the label.

Follow health and safety considerations

The product label and SDS (safety data sheet) always include relevant health and safety information on how to use the disinfectant. Staff should always read the label and the SDS before using the product and follow all of the instructions.

How To Use Disinfectants Effectively In 6 Steps

Only use registered products

Each country will have a strict process to test, approve and register disinfectants. Using a disinfectant approved by the Government or its appointed agency will ensure the product meets specific criteria for effective performance in its designated settings and applications.

Consider one-step cleaner disinfectants

With traditional two-step disinfection, staff must always clean the surface before they can use a disinfectant. Modern formulations now allow surfaces with light-to-moderate soiling to be cleaned and disinfected in a single pass. These combined cleaner disinfectants are known as one-step products. They are tested in the presence of organic soil to ensure that they will perform as expected. However, surfaces with heavy soiling must still be pre-cleaned before using any disinfectant.

Our Team Said

Dr. Gong said: The key swimming pool chemicals are disinfectants, flocculants or clarifiers, and algaecides and the core elements are chlorine (or bromine), aluminum, and cationic polymers. While pool chemistry may appear straightforward, there is an important nuance: the reactions occur in highly dilute solutions, which sets it apart from most other areas of chemistry. This distinction means that some general chemical assumptions don't always apply accurately to pool water treatment. Additionally, since pool managers are rarely trained chemists, it's crucial to anticipate and address potential issues thoroughly and efficiently. Sometimes, even slight variations in water quality can become significant, creating complex puzzles where multiple factors overlap. Solving these challenges deepens both our team's expertise in product applications and my own knowledge of chemistry.

FAQ

Q: What is the most commonly used disinfectant?

A: CHLORINE. Chlorine, including SDIC, TCCA, Cal Hypo, etc., is the universal disinfectant, active against all microorganisms.
