PAC Grading and Selection Standards
The color of polyaluminium chloride (PAC) mainly depends on its production process and raw materials. It is usually classified into four types: white, light yellow, golden yellow, and dark colors. The depth of the color represents the difference in purity and application.
|
Color Category |
Grade Definition |
Key Characteristics |
|
White PAC |
Food / Pharmaceutical Grade |
Highest purity (Al2O3≥30%), zero iron ion residue. |
|
Light Yellow PAC |
Drinking Water Treatment Grade |
Strictly controlled heavy metal content; complies with GB15892-2020 standards. |
|
Golden Yellow PAC |
General Industrial Wastewater Grade |
High cost-performance ratio; strong flocculation ability with rapid sedimentation. |
|
Dark PAC (Brown/Tan) |
Specialized Low-Temp / High-Turbidity Grade |
High iron content; specifically adapted for low-temperature and low-turbidity environments. |

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of PAC
Based on industrial standards, the efficacy of PAC coagulant is determined by three core metrics: Al2O3 content, Basicity (B), and Water-Insoluble Matter. Understanding these ensures the stability and efficiency of the dosing system.
- Al2O3: The higher the Al2O3 content of PAC, the greater the density and the higher the viscosity.
- Basicity (B): The base degree can be adjusted, generally ranging from 40% to 95%. The theoretically optimal base degree is 80-82%. Because the Al in PAC has various forms (Ala, Alb, Alc), the same base degree does not necessarily mean the same flocculation performance. The higher the base degree of PAC, the higher the solution pH.
- Water-insoluble matter: The finer the powder obtained by crushing the raw mineral materials, the higher the alumina solubility. However, at the same time, the insoluble matter is also more difficult to precipitate. The commonly used solid-liquid separation methods include: natural precipitation method. It takes a long time; plate and frame filter press filtration. It requires a large investment and high energy consumption; adding PAM and other coagulants to accelerate solid sedimentation.
PAC Water Treatment Applications
Industrial Wastewater (COD Removal): In complex semi-aerobic sewage treatment, an optimized dose of 2,000 mg/L PAC has demonstrated removal rates of 93% for color, 56% for COD, and 32% for Ammonia Nitrogen.
Swimming Pool Clarification: Recommended dosage of 5-10 ppm. For optimal results, water pH should be pre-adjusted to 7.5-7.8; dosing should ideally occur during night-time or closing hours to ensure complete flocculation.
Personal Care Industry: Utilized as a specialized additive in cosmetics, where PAC water-hydrolyzes to form an Al(OH)3 film, effectively serving as an antiperspirant agent by blocking sweat glands.
