Poly aluminum chloride (PAC) is an excellent water treatment chemical, often used as a flocculant to remove impurities and suspended matter in water, to achieve the effect of clarifying water. The color of poly aluminum chloride is not unchanged, from milk white to yellow, and even presents different transparency. The color comes from Fe in products. If there is higher content of Fe, the color will be darker. Fe is introduced into PAC by the following raw materials:

• Bauxite or calcium aluminate;
• Industrial grade hydrochloric acid usually contains Fe.

Generally speaking, Fe is good for flocculation and coagulation, and Fe in PAC can help achieve better flocculation results. However, Fe is adverse in the following situations:

• When there are strict requirements for the color of the water or the Fe content, it should be chosen PAC in light yellow instead of the dark one;
• When PAC is not used for flocculation but as an auxiliary agent, Fe content needs to be strictly controlled. For example, when PAC is used as an additive in the cosmetic field, white high-purity PAC should be selected.

At present, we have four colors of PAC products, including PAC-I, PAC-D, PAC-H, and PAC-M, which play an important role in water treatment. Now let's introduce the differences between these four products.

• PAC-I: This is industrial grade poly aluminum chloride, in the form of yellow powder. PAC-I is widely used in the tail-end wastewater of various industrial production, including textile, leather, printing and dyeing, etc. Moreover, it also has the good performance on river dredging. PAC-I is not only more advantageous in terms of price, but also can meet most industrial water treatment needs. Because PAC-I has a high basicity, it will be better treated in high turbidity water.

 

• PAC-D: Transparently, PAC for drinking water. Compared to PAC-I, it is lighter in color, with a light yellow color. Because PAC-D has lower heavy metals, it is ideal for drinking water treatment. Of course, it also has all the functions of industrial water treatment.

 

• PAC-H: This is a high purity poly aluminum chloride in a white powder form. PAC-H is widely used in drinking water treatment, industrial wastewater treatment, electroplating, paper making and other fields. But the cost of PAC-H is high.

 

• PAC-M: It is an alternative to PAC-H and has the same purpose as PAC-H. PAC-M is milky white.
