It is comfortable to enjoy this, however, you need to pay attention to the maintain the spa or hot tub in order to keep your and your family's health. Just like swimming pools, spas also require proper care and the right chemicals to remain safe and clean. Here are some suggestions.

How to maintain your spa or hot tub

As mentioned above, for spa chemicals, it is basically similar as the swimming pool. For example, you need test strips, disinfectants, spa shock, total alkalinity increaser , pH Plus, pH Minus, calcium hardness increaser and so on. In addition to these chemicals, you will need an extra chemical than pool, that is a plumbing or line flush cleaner. After having all these chemicals, you can start to maintain your hot tub.

Step 1: Using the test strips to test the chemicals and mineral substances levels. Just simply put the strip into the water, wait about fifteen seconds, and check the results. The standard range will be indicated on the test strip, so it is easy to check your hot tub. Need spa or pool test strips? We supply high-quality options.

Step 2: According to the test result, if the total alkalinity is lower than 80 ppm, you need to add alkalinity increaser to make the alkalinity in the range of 80-120 ppm. If it is over 120 ppm, you should add sodium hydrogen sulfate in one point to decrease the the total alkalinity. When adding or after adding the chemicals, please remember to keep the pump running to make the water circulate.

Step 3: Using a sanitizer chemical to disinfect your spa or hot hub, whether it is chlorine or bromine, or any other product that can take effect. If you choose chlorine, you need to add 7.5 milligram per liter if there is no chlorine added before. For the bromine system, it is necessary to add 30 mg/L sodium bromide along with the water to create a bromine reserve before the hydrotherapy pool is used.

Step 4: Check the calcium hardness and adjust it in the range of 150-250 ppm. Too high calcium hardness can lead to calcium deposits and scaling, yet, too low calcium hardness will cause rust and bad hot tub shell. If the calcium hardness is very high, the best solution is to drain the hot tub, scrub it and start over with fresh filtered water.

After adding all the chemicals above, you can get a clean and safe spa or hot hub. But as time goes by, the plumbing will accumulate mineral deposits, dirt and grime. Use line flush cleaner per quarter.

Except the chemicals, there are something to note, too:

  • Taking a shower before using the spa or hot tub. Because your hair or other small things may clog the filter.
  • Cleaning the filter every two weeks and clean the hot tub cover monthly.
  • It is best to keep your heated pool running at all times, otherwise if you stop it, algae and bacteria may grow.

Baed on these suggestions, we hope you can have a spa or hot hub with good condition. And if you need some chemicals for pool, spa or hot tub, welcome to contact us.
